The devs released an updated build last night which fixes the issues with Dropbox encountered by several users. My local network still takes a few minutes to print a document from the iPad running iOS 4.2.1 GM to the Mac, but everything’s working now. Yesterday I found out about this new app for Mac, Printopia, which the Ecamm developers tout as the simplest way to enable AirPrint for every printer you have configured on your Mac, together with the possibility to print from an iOS device to a local directory on your Mac and Dropbox.Īfter some initial issues I tweeted about last night, Printopia is finally working for me. A number of printers from Brother, Canon, Epson, HP and Lexmark have this feature. Compatible with macOS Ventura (13.0) and runs. Requires macOS 10.9 or later and iOS 4.2 or later. Other iOS printing apps include HP Smart, Lexmark Mobile Print, and Samsung. To print directly to a printer from the iPad, the printer itself must be AirPrint capable and on the same wireless network as your iPad. Printopia allows you to share up to five (5) physical printers. ConclusionirPrinting from an iPhone or iPad to a non-AirPrint printer is possible. But thing is, these apps and tweaks stop working after a couple of print sessions. AirPrint is an Apple technology built into the iOS to support printing from the iPad. Perhaps my local network isn’t stable enough, perhaps I have issues with 10.6.5. I’ve tried many of them, and I don’t know why – after some time they just stop working for me. We’ve covered some of them, such as the AirPrint Hacktivator, but in my personal experience I’ve found these hacks to be unreliable at best. The video below not only comically illustrates the problem with Apple’s built-in solution as well as how well Printopia works.Since Apple removed AirPrint support from OS X 10.6.5 (we’re referring to support for shared printers, which was enabled in earlier 10.6.5 beta versions), many tweaks and apps to re-activate the functionality have surfaced on the internet. I’ll be uninstalling all three from my iPad and buying Printopia instead.Īs we asked at the outset, what could have kept Apple from doing what a tiny company the fraction of the size of the corporate giant? Our hope is that Apple buys out Printopia and fold it into OS X as soon as possible. This is much more convenient than some of the other solutions we tried, like PrintCentral or Printer Pro, both apps that add printing via iPad Apps with some less convenient workarounds to perform, or the failed attempt to bring networked printing to the iPad by PogoPlug. AirPrint Activator is a free download, although the developer politely asks for a small donation, making it a much more inexpensive option than the 20 Printopia. Printopia runs in the background and the user only notices it when opening up the System Preferences. So this might have been a printer driver issue and not a Printopia problem. After reinstalling our printer driver and then Printopia, it worked fine. We had a little trouble getting things set up at first. From any iOS device, select Print and you’ll find the printers from your OS X machine shared through Printopia. Printopia will look for printers on your Mac and the Dropbox directory and will share them on your local network. The other virtual printer will send the file to the Mac’s Dropbox folder if one exists. To enable the functionality, just move the slider button to On. While early builds of the Hacktivator did depend on a handful of files. “Send to Mac” takes the content being printed on the iPad and sends it to the Mac with Printopia installed as either a JPG or PDF file. The AirPrint Hacktivator page has a short video that demonstrates how to share a printer if youve never done it before. Friday Favorite: Yet another reason to love Printopia Ecamm releases Printopia Pro for corporate users Canon adds AirPrint to Pixma printers We have two. It shares any printer connect to that computer, either directly or through a networked printer, with the iPad. Printopia is an inexpensive application (only $9.95 with a 30 day free trial). If Ecamm Network, the company behind Printopia, can make it work, why can’t Apple? Printopia is software that runs on any Mac and makes AirPrint useful to the masses. With the release of iOS 4.2, AirPrint is now a standard feature of the iPad, but its usefulness is severely limited since only a few printers are supported.
